RAMS FINISH PRESEASON ROAD SLATE AT BENGALS |
|
The Rams aim to rebound from a 20-13 loss to the Atlanta
Falcons as they travel to Cincinnati to face the Bengals on
Thursday in the team’s final road contest of the preseason.
The Rams face the Bengals in the preseason for the second
time in team history. The Rams and Bengals previously met
in the 1988 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio
as the Bengals defeated the Rams, 14-7. The Rams and
Bengals have met 11 times in the regular season with Cincinnati holding a 6-5 advantage over St. Louis. The Rams and Bengals most recently met in 2007 at Paul Brown
Stadium in Cincinnati.
Through two preseason games the Rams are 1-1. WR Laurent Robinson, acquired
in April in a trade with Atlanta, has been a strong performer for the Rams this preseason.
Robinson leads the Rams with seven receptions for 117 yards and recorded
five receptions for 65 yards last week vs. Atlanta (8/21). K Josh Brown is perfect
in the preseason, converting five-of-five field goals and contributing 18 total points.
Rams rookies have also contributed. Last week vs. Atlanta, No. 2 overall selection
T Jason Smith made his first NFL start, second-round choice LB James Laurinaitis
recorded two tackles and an interception, and fourth-round choice DT Darell Scott
tallied four tackles, including 1.0 sack. |

4th Quarter
- The Rams could not convert the third down and were forced to punt again. This time, Jones boomed one that bounced inside the 5 and was killed at the 3 to back the Bengals up deep into their territory.
- Penalties pushed Cincinnati back to its 5 before defensive end C.J. Ah You had a sack and forced a fumble. The Bengals got a big conversion from Scott to keep the drive alive.
- The Bengals took advantage of that conversion as Jordan Palmer hit Chris Henry for a 54-yard touchdown. Cincinnati went 97 yards on the drive but covered most of it on three plays.
- With 9:58 to go, the Rams lead 24-21.
- The Bengals got a quick stop and drove into Rams territory. On fourth-and-1 in field goal range, Marvin Lewis opted to go for it and the Rams got the stop.
- Keith Null hit Sean Walker for a gain of 24 yards to get it out of St. Louis territory.
- The Rams’ drive stalled and Brown attempted a 51-yard field goal that was again wide.
- Cincinnati took over at its 41 with 3:10 to play.
- Eric Moore came up with a huge sack and forced fumble that was recovered by C.J. Ah You at the Rams’ 35.
- The Rams came up with the necessary first down and salted the clock away to come away with a 24-21 win. |
3rd Quarter
- Neither the Rams nor Bengals could get anything going on their respective opening possessions of the half as both sides used their starting units.
- But Cincinnati struck on special teams with a 43-yard punt return on another low line drive from Jones to give Cincinnati possession at the Rams’ 38.
- The Bengals’ drive was killed though when cornerback Quincy Butler intercepted Jordan Palmer and returned it 63 yards to Cincinnati’s 22.
- The Rams couldn’t move it with the backups in on offense though and settled for a 38-yard field goal from Brown to make it 24-14 with five minutes to go in the quarter.
- Rams defense gets another stop with the help of a Victor Adeyanju sack.
- At the end of three, the Rams lead 24-14 and face a third-and-9 at their 43. |
2nd Quarter
- Jones boomed a 55-yard punt to force the Bengals to start from their 25.
- After a first down pickup, Larry Grant stopped Benson for a loss of 3 on first down.
- Benson got it right back and then some with a gain of 12 yards on second down to set up a third-and-1. Jeremi Johnson picked up 3 to convert.
- After getting to the Rams 32, safety Oshiomogho Atogwe did what he does best and ripped the ball loose from running back Bernard Scott. Butler scooped it up and raced 73 yards for a touchdown and a 21-7 lead with 10:11 to go in the half.
- The Bengals started their next possession from their 31 and marched into Rams territory with the help of a 14-yard run on third down by O’Sullivan.
- On third-and-8 the Rams appeared to get off the field but Jonathan Wade was flagged for a hold.
- Pass interference on Ron Bartell gave Cincinnati a first down at the Rams’ 1.
- Former Ram Brian Leonard punched it in from 1-yard out to trim the Rams’ lead to 21-14 with 6:12 to go in the half.
- The Rams drove into Cincinnati territory but couldn’t convert a third-and-1 as Pittman was dropped in the backfield for a loss of 4.
- The defense stepped up and got a quick stop and the Rams took over at their 48 with 1:29 to go in the half.
- Brown kicked a 50-yard field goal but the Bengals called timeout before he could get it off. When he attempted it again, he missed wide left. At the half, the Rams lead 21-14. |
1st Quarter
- For the first time this preseason, the Rams won the toss and elected to receive.
- Samkon Gado got the first return opportunity and his efforts were nullified by a block in the back on David Roach.
- The Rams opened the drive from their 11. They never got any traction after running back Steven Jackson lost 1 on the opening play and the Rams went three and out.
- A surprisingly short punt from Donnie Jones was returned by Quan Cosby for 49 yards and a touchdown to give Cincinnati a 7-0 lead with 13:54 to go in the quarter.
- The Rams responded though as the offense put together its finest drive of the preseason, marching 71 yards for a tying touchdown as Samkon Gado burst 16 yards off tackle for a touchdown.
- Fullback Mike Karney had a nice drive, opening holes on three consecutive runs for Gado to help the Rams get in the end zone.
- The biggest play of the drive was a 14-yard completion on third down to Ronald Curry to keep the possession alive.
- The Bengals got their first possession but the Rams didn’t allow it to last long as James Butler got a sack on the first play and a fumbled snap on second down was recovered by James Laurinaitis at Cincinnati’s 20.
- The Rams quickly turned their sixth takeaway of the preseason to points, covering the 20 yards in five plays. Gado scored this time on a 2-yard shuffle pass from Boller to give the Rams a 14-7 lead with 4:51 to go in the quarter.
- Cincinnati started its next drive from the 17 and converted a third-and-6 on a 23-yard completion to Andre Caldwell.
- David Vobora got a 4-yard sack and a 10-yard holding penalty pushed the Bengals back to their 30.
- On third-and-25, the Bengals completed an 8-yard pass but fell well short of the first down and the defense got off the field again.
- The Rams went three and out and will punt it away to start the second quarter. |
Pregame
Notes
- Greetings from Paul Brown Stadium where the Rams and Bengals are preparing to kickoff preseason contest No. 3.
- If ever there was a sign that the Rams are getting healthier, it’s apparent by looking at the pre-game injury list. Only quarterback Marc Bulger and guard Jacob Bell are officially ruled out for the game.
- Receiver Donnie Avery is not starting as Keenan Burton will start in his place. Avery is listed as available but he isn’t likely to play.
- Mark Setterstrom will start for Bell and Kyle Boller will start for Bulger.
- Adam Carriker and Tim Carter will also be available but it’s unclear how much they will play if at all.
- Gary Gibson will start for Carriker, as expected.
- For Cincinnati, J.T. O’Sullivan starts in place of Carson Palmer at quarterback. The Bengals have quite a few injuries along the roster. Michael Johnson will step in place of Antwan Odom at end and Chinedum Ndukwe starts for Chris Crocker at free safety.
- Chad Johnson isn’t likely to get some kicking opportunities as the Bengals brought in Sam Swank for the injured Shayne Graham.
- Be back with quarterly updates and you can also follow along on Twitter @OneRamsWay.
