Our Visit to South Korea
Tuesday, February 27, 2007

By Lindsey Bernaix
Special to StLouisrams.com

Our visit to South Korea was a trip we will never forget.  Although it was so exciting to experience another culture, the most memorable part of our trip was the interaction we were able to have with the troops.  Everyone at the Chinhae (MWR) Naval Base was so welcoming and appreciative of the time we spent with them.  We can not express our gratitude enough for the sacrifices they make for us, and our country, daily.  The base was very small with only approximately 150 navy personnell which provided us the opportunity to personally interact with many sailors from throughout the United States, who have spent anywhere from a couple of months to a couple of years in South Korea.  We had a great time entertaining everyone at the Superbowl party, which was at 8:30am, Monday morning!!  We signed autographs, took pictures, performed routines, and judged the 'touchdown dance' competition! The party gave us an opportunity to not only visit with the sailors, but also meet and visit with their families.

In addition to the Superbowl party, we traveled to a local army base to host a cheerleading clinic for all the children who live on the base. There were over 50 girls of all ages and all levels of experience who participated in the clinic.  They came full of energy and eager to learn! After a brief warm-up, we taught a fun dance to the girls, which they then performed for their families, friends and each other.

During our free time, members of the base took us on tours of the cities of Busan and Chinhae.  It was amazing to exprience a different culture, something so different than what we are accustomed to here in America. Pusan and Chinhae are both beautiful cities, with lots to see and do.  We walked through the Pusan public park, visited the pier, explored public markets, and tried various local food dishes common to the Korean culture.

South Korea is a wonderful country we are so fortunate to have had the chance to visit. However, it was the time we spent with the troops that made our trip so memorable!  It was our opportunity to show them just how grateful we are, along with the entire St. Louis Rams organization, for everthing they do and sacrifice to protect our country.
