The St. Louis Rams will hold the team’s first training camp under first-year
head coach Steve Spagnuolo at the Russell Training Center in Earth City.
Rookies, quarterbacks and selected veterans will report to the Russell Training
Center on July 29 and hold two practices on July 30. The remainder of the
team will report July 30 and the first full-squad practice will be held on July 31.
The St. Louis Rams Bud Light Training Camp presented by Russell Athletic will
feature 32 practices open to the public at the Russell Training Center in Earth
City, Mo., and an open scrimmage at Lindenwood University in St. Charles,
Mo., on August 7. The Rams will travel to New York to take on the Jets on
August 14 in their first presason contest, before returing to St. Louis to host the
Atlanta Falcons at the newly-renovated Edward Jones Dome on August 21.
The Rams will conclude training camp on August 23 before finishing their preseason
schedule with contests at Cincinnati (August 27) and vs. Kansas City in
the annual Governor’s Cup contest (September 3).
This past offseason, Rams owners Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez
oversaw a sweeping reorganization of the Rams’ front office. Rosenbloom promoted
Billy Devaney to General Manager and named Kevin Demoff Executive
Vice President of Football Operations/Chief Operating Officer. Working closely
with Devaney, and owner/vice chairman Stan Kroenke, Rosenbloom and
Rodriguez also helped coordinate the coaching search that resulted in former
New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo being named the 25th
head coach in the 72-year history of the Rams.
Spagnuolo, who enters his 11th season in the NFL, came to the Rams after a
stellar career as defensive coordinator of the New York Giants and was the
architect of the defense that shut down the high-octane New England Patriots
in the Giants’ stunning 17-14 win in Super Bowl XLII. He was with New York for
two seasons, after serving on the defensive staff of the Philadelphia Eagles for
eight years. Steve coached in the college ranks and in professional football in
Europe for 18 years before joining the Eagles in 1999. Spagnuolo will lead a coaching staff that includes Defensive Coordinator Ken Flajole, Offensive
Coordinator Pat Shurmur and Special Teams Coordinator Tom McMahon.
The offseason saw the Rams make moves on-the-field as well. The Rams
franchised free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe, re-signed starting cornerback Ron
Bartell and added starting center Jason Brown from the Baltimore Ravens. The
Rams also added solid contributors in safety James Butler from the Giants and
fullback Mike Karney from the New Orleans Saints. In April, St. Louis added
seven players in the NFL Draft, including second-overall choice tackle Jason
Smith and second-round choice linebacker James Laurinaitis.
Fans are encouraged to come to the Russell Training Center and support the
Rams during traning camp. Bleachers will be provided around the practice
fields for fans to sit, and additional seating will be available on the hill near the
fields. Official Rams’ merchandise and limited refreshments will be for sale.
An autograph session will follow each open morning practice and the
Lindenwood scrimmage, subject to change.
