Tom McMahon is in his first season with the Rams as special teams coordinator after spending 2007-08 as assistant special teams coach for the Atlanta Falcons.
McMahon was instrumental in the development of kick returner Jerious Norwood, whose 2,628 kickoff return yards are third-most in the NFL over the last two seasons. Norwood’s 1,317 kickoff return yards in 2007 rank second in Falcons history and his 1,311 yards in 2008 rank third.
McMahon spent one season with the University of Louisville in 2006, coaching outside linebackers and special teams. Under McMahon’s guidance, kicker Art Carmody was a first-team All-Big East Conference selection and earned the Lou Groza Award, given to the nation’s top kicker. Carmody connected on 21 of 25 field goals attempts, including all five field goals attempted from 40 or more yards.
McMahon joined Louisville after 11 seasons at Utah State, including eight seasons as a full-time assistant. His eight-year tenure at the school was the fourth-longest in Utah State history. McMahon served as defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator from
2001-05 after coaching linebackers and special teams from 1998-2000. McMahon joined
Utah State in 1995 as a graduate assistant, coaching defensive ends. One of McMahon’s
players, Ben Crosland, was named Big West Defensive Player of the Year in 1997.
A native of Helena, Mont., McMahon made his coaching debut at his alma mater, Carroll College in Helena. After concluding his four-year playing career, McMahon served as the school’s secondary coach in 1992. After a one-year stint at Bozeman High School in 1993, McMahon returned to coach the secondary at Carroll College in 1994.
McMahon is married to Kim and the couple has three children, Dawson, Emmett and Quincy. McMahon holds a bachelor’s degree in Math and Secondary Education from Carroll College and a master’s degree in Secondary Education from Utah State.
