Richard Curl came to the Rams with an abundance of coaching experience at the high school, college and pro levels, most recently with the Kansas City Chiefs.
A former University of Richmond quarterback (1958-62) who began his coaching career on the high school level in 1962, Curl was assistant to Chiefs’ head coach Herm Edwards in 2006 and assistant head coach/quarterbacks in 2007-08. Curl also worked with the Chiefs as a pro personnel assistant from 2000-02.
Curl’s first NFL coaching position was as tight ends coach with the New York Jets in 2003. He was senior offensive assistant/special projects in 2004 and assistant to the head coach/running backs coach in 2005.
Prior to the NFL, Curl spent nine seasons coaching in the NFL Europe League. From 1998-2000, Curl was head coach of the Frankfurt Galaxy. The Galaxy made two World Bowl appearances and won the NFL Europe title in 1999. Curl was named the league’s Coach of the Year in 1998 and 1999, the only coach in NFL Europe history to win the honor in consecutive seasons.
Curl was offensive coordinator for the Barcelona Dragons from 1991-97. The Dragons made World Bowl appearances in 1991 and 1997, winning the NFL Europe title in 1997. Under Curl’s guidance QB Jon Kitna led an offense that averaged 360.2 yards per game that season.
Curl spent 30 years coaching in the high school and college ranks before arriving in NFL Europe. Curl made his collegiate debut at Trenton State in New Jersey in 1973 as receivers coach and was head coach in 1974. He also served at Rutgers University (1975-80, 1983-89), the University of Virginia (1981-82) and Boston College (1990).
A native of Chester, Pa., Curl was a high school coach for 11 years, beginning in 1962 as head coach of Lee Davis High School in Mechanicsville, Va. Curl also coached at Shamokin High in Pennsylvania (1963-65), Cherry Hill (N.J.) East (1968-73) and at John
F. Kennedy (1965-68) in Willingboro, N.J. Curl is a member of the Chester High School Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (Delaware County Chapter).
Curl is married to Beverly. The couple has three daughters, Debbie, Karen and Susan, who are all married, and 11 grandchildren.
